Milan fashion: Missoni's show is a family affair
There are approximately 300 shows spread across four weeks at this time of year, so it is important that designers make their brand memorable. Missoni did this in the final 30 seconds of the show.
Angela, the creative director and daughter of founders Rosita and Ottavio, showed her face for the customary bow and, as she walked towards the end of the catwalk, her children Margherita, Teresa and Francesco, as well as several other flowing-haired Missonis, stood up and followed. I wanted to get up there and join the parade; they all looked so wholesome and friendly. The Missonis are a clever bunch. They know that heritage and authenticity are where it’s at and are sure as hell going to use it to their advantage; their summer ad campaign is also digging the family thing. For next season, clothes-wise, the best bits were the knitted booties with jangly metal spurs, the cool, sharp pink threads knitted into blood red, black and beige, the little bra tops layered beneath cardigans and several variations on the slim, woven trouser. The intricately embellished pieces were also beautiful. There were a few long, bobbled evening dresses that probably won’t get the customers excited but it didn’t matter. Everyone left feeling as if they’d had a big Missoni hug — and these days, that’s what counts.
